Answer Engine Optimization: How Customers Find You When AI Answers First
Your next customer is asking ChatGPT, not scrolling Google. The answer cites two or three sources, and either you are one of them or you are invisible. A scorecard shows whether an answer engine would cite you today, and the fixes are more honest than any SEO trick.
Contents
Somewhere today, a buyer typed a question that your business is the right answer to. Five years ago they would have gotten ten blue links, and your job was to be one of the top few. Today they got a paragraph. The paragraph named two companies. If yours was not one of them, you did not lose the click. There was no click to lose.
The math changed, not the fundamentals
Search engine optimization was a game of position in a list everyone could see. Answer engine optimization is a game of being quoted in a paragraph that has room for two or three names. That is the whole shift, and it is worth being precise about, because both the panic and the hype get it wrong.
One written answer cites two or three sources by name. The customer reads it, trusts it, and often never scrolls past it.
Winner takes most. Losing means not existing.
Ten links share the page. Rank three still gets seen, rank seven still gets something. Everyone fights for position, but everyone is visible.
A trickle each. Losing meant less traffic.
Classic search has not disappeared, and the overlap between good SEO and good AEO is large: clear writing, real answers, structured pages. What changed is the distribution of the reward. The gap between cited and not-cited is far wider than the gap between rank one and rank five ever was.
What an answer engine is actually looking for
This is the same technology we describe from the inside in how an answer engine works over your own documents: retrieve the most relevant, most quotable passages, then write an answer grounded in them, with citations. When the corpus is the public web and the question is “who should modernize our quoting software,” your website is one of the documents being retrieved, or it is not.
That framing tells you exactly what wins. Not keyword density, not backlink schemes: retrievability and quotability. The engine needs to find a passage that plainly answers the question, trust what it found, and be able to lift it into the answer. The same properties that make context worth retrieving inside a product make your pages worth citing outside it.

The fixes are writing discipline, not tricks
Everything on that list is unglamorous, which is exactly why it works. There is no AEO submission form, no meta tag that buys citations. The engines cite whoever made the answer easiest to assemble, and that is a property you control completely.
How a citation happens
The answer engine
Retrieves the clearest source, quotes it, links it
Your name, inside the answer, with the link
Start with the questions you already get on sales calls, the same discipline as collecting the real questions before building an internal answer engine. Each becomes a page or FAQ that answers in the first breath. The FAQ block at the bottom of this very page is doing that job right now: every question is phrased the way people actually search it, and structured data underneath hands it to the machines whole. Say the concrete things marketing pages avoid: who it is for, what it costs, how long it takes, where you work. A machine cannot quote fog, and increasingly, neither can your buyer, because the machine is doing the reading for them.
Write every key page so a machine could quote one paragraph of it, whole, and the quote would still be true, specific, and yours.
The honest caveats
Two things this post will not promise. First, you cannot measure AEO the way you measured rankings: there is no position report for a thousand private ChatGPT conversations. You will see it instead in “heard about you from ChatGPT” showing up in your intake form, so ask the question there. Second, being citable will not save a business with nothing distinct to cite. An answer engine compresses the market to its clearest few sources, which makes what only you can claim matter more, not less. AEO gets your true differences quoted. It cannot invent them.
What to do Monday
Take your five most-asked sales questions. Check each against your website: is there a page that answers it plainly, near the top, in words a machine could lift? For most businesses the honest answer is one out of five. Fix one per week, add the structured data underneath, and put “how did you hear about us” on your contact form so you can watch the channel appear. In a market where the answer only has room for two names, being the clearest source on five real questions is worth more than ranking for fifty vague ones.

Frequently asked questions
What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
It is making your website the source an AI assistant cites when it answers a buyer's question. Where SEO optimized for ranking in a list of links, AEO optimizes for being quoted inside the one answer the customer actually reads, by answering real questions plainly, keeping facts machine-readable, and being the clearest source on your topic.
Is SEO dead now that AI answers questions directly?
No, and anyone selling that line is overcorrecting. Classic search still drives real traffic, and the fundamentals overlap heavily: clear content, real answers, structured data. What changed is the winner-take-most math. A results page gave ten sites a trickle each. An AI answer cites two or three sources and sends everyone else nothing, so the gap between cited and invisible is much wider than the gap between rank one and rank five ever was.
How do I get my business cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity?
Be the easiest source to quote. Answer the questions buyers actually ask, in plain language, near the top of the page. Mark pages up with structured data so machines can read what you do, where you are, and what you claim. State facts as facts with dates. There is no submission form and no trick: answer engines cite the source that made the answer easy to assemble.
How is AEO different from just writing good content?
It mostly is writing good content, held to a machine's standard of clarity. The difference is discipline: a human skims past marketing fog, but an answer engine simply cannot quote a page that never states anything concrete. AEO forces you to say what you do, who it is for, and what it costs in sentences a machine can lift whole.
